Description
Earrings featuring a carved mother of pearl shell teardrops with hematite bead accents. Hypo-allergenic surgical steel posts. Approximate size 43mm x 7mm (1.7 x 0.3″).
Hematite derives it’s name from the Greek word meaning ‘Blood’. This is because when cut, the high level of iron in the stone causes the saw coolant to turn blood red in colour. Shiny Hematite crystals are sometimes called ‘Specularite’ (from Latin for ‘mirror’) and were used as mirrors in ancient times. The stone is rated 6 on the Mohs harness scale, which makes it excellent for quality, high luster jewellery and small carvings.
Hematite occurrences are found in parts of the Yukon, British Columbia, Labrador, Quebec and Brazil.
