Garnet is the birthstone for January. Named by the ancient Greeks, the name comes from the Latin “Garanatus” or “seedlike” as it reminded them of pomegranate seeds. Garnet is actually a large family of silicate minerals but the best known type is the red semi-precious stone pyrope. They are found in Africa, India, Russia, Brazil, Thailand, Madagascar, Pakistan, Canada and the USA.
Garnet has been treasured for thousands of years, with use dating back to 3100 B.C. They were used in jewellery as well as industrially as an abrasive. Garnets were even said to have been used by Asiatic tribes as pellets shot from bows to inflict wounds that were especially bloody.
It is said that the stone revitalizes, purifies and balances energy, aiding in letting go of useless or obsolete ideas.
